"This is bush tomato. Flowering, with pretty purple flowers, and without the flower. The bushes are full; heavy with fruit." Depictions of bush tucker and bush medicine are common among the artists of Epenarra. Bush tomato is particularly common as it grows well in the rocky area surrounding Epenarra. The fruit is considered ripe when its colour turns into a green-yellow, but the black seeds need to be removed before it is eaten. In the Barkly, people are still collecting bush tucker to feed their family. Bush tucker provides a healthy alternative to Western foods and the rituals of gathering bush tucker provide a means of passing knowledge onto the younger generation.
