"They're putting the baby near the fire, they smoke it. They make a hole and they light a fire and they put him in the smoke."
Tartukula artist Susannah Nelson has painted a scene where a newborn baby is smoked in a ceremony that makes them healthy and strong. Out on country, surrounded by three large trees, women make a hole, light a fire in it an then hold the baby in the smoke. Susannah has embellished the canvas with large, bold dotting. Smoking The Babies is painted in Susannah's signature naive style, which employs the use of block figures and bold colours on a flat landscape.
