Collection: Epenarra Artists

Nestled in the Hill Country on the North-Eastern edge of Iytwelepenty (the Davenport Ranges) is the small community of Wutunugurra. Home to approximately 200 people, predominantly of the Alyawarr language group, the community is contained to housing, an outback store, a church, a health centre and a school. At its nucleus sits the home of the Epenarra artists, the most prolific studio in the Artists of the Barkly collective.

The Epenarra artists use very fine dot work to blur the line between traditional, abstract dot painting and figurative landscape. Frequently favouring a brightly coloured palette, the artists depict Country with vast landscapes featuring motifs of bush tucker and bush medicines. Their paintings often incorporate narrative with elements of loosely rendered figurative imagery, thus echoing the naïve style commonly seen in the work of Tennant Creek’s Tartukula artists.
