Collection: Kulumindini Artists
At the Northern tip of the Barkly Region on the edge of Newcastle Waters Station sits the community of Elliott. Home to about 300 people, predominately of the Jingili language group, Elliott is a haven for many bird species who habitat the ephemeral Lake Woods. Elliott hosts the Kulumindini Artists, the Northern-most group in the Artists of the Barkly collective.
The Kulumindini Artists celebrate connection to Country in their explorations of the environment, which often focus on the effect shifting seasons has on the desert’s flora and fauna. The playful use of colour, defined lines, and measured dot-work that characterises much of the work from the Kulumindini studio evokes the legacy of print-making and textiles that once dominated this community. Otherwise, the group is notable for its breadth of variety, with each artist developing a singular visual language that speaks to their individual experiences before they came together to start painting as a collective.
